Morocco gained independence from France on 7 April 1956 and negotiated with Spain from 1956 to 1958 for the control of Spanish areas. Southern Spanish enclaves were integrated into Morocco in 1969 but there remains no resolution on the status of the western Sahara area which Morocco annexed in the 1975 with the Green March.
