The oldest known site of continuous Aboriginal occupation in NSW is Lake Mungo near Balranald in South-Western NSW. A burial at the site has been dated to between 40000 and 50000 years old. (An early study suggested a greater age, of over 60000 years.) Aborigines are thought to have migrated from Asia at a time of lower sea levels than today, hopping between islands until they reached the mainland. This suggests that they probably reached the boundaries of NSW some time before the Lake Mungo settlement, but the history of their expanding occupation of the area is not well understood.
