Tasmania is no longer connected to the Australian continent because of the movement of tectonic plates, over the many millions of years before humans. Such as most of the world is now broken into many different pieces that look like the may fit together. Unlike most separations of land, the Tasmania-Australia separation did not happen at the connection of two separate plates

Tasmania is still joined to Australia. Bass strait is simply where the level of the ocean is higher than the continental plate both islands are part of. This can quite easily be seen using Google Earth. Australia is currently moving northwards together with Tasmania as this tectonic plate moves northwards away from Antarctica at a rate of several centimetres per year.

Gondwana, the original continent comprising Australia which Tasmania is part of, Antarctica and others broke at various stages hundreds of millions of years ago.

Van Diemen's Land, the former name of Tasmania, was always settled as a separate colony, as it was thousands of kilometres from Sydney. It was originally administered by the Governor of New South Wales, but once the colony had been growing for about two decades, it was formally separated from the NSW administration, on either 7 or 14 June 1825. The original founding documents have not been located, so further details are unknown.
