North Dakota was the 39th or 40th state admitted to the United States. No one knows for sure which. South Dakota was admitted the same time, and the Secretary of State helping the president signing the papers kept them hidden, so no one could see which one the president signed first.
North Dakota's statehood date is November 2, 1889, so North Dakota celebrated their Centennial, or 100 years of statehood, in 1989.
Before statehood, North Dakota was part of the Dakota Territory. The Dakota Territory was named for the Dakota Sioux settlements in the area. At the time of statehood, what was left of the Dakota Territory was split into two states, North Dakota and South Dakota.
North Dakota was admitted to our union on November 2,1889 along with South Dakota.
