Jerusalem was adopted as the capital of Israel by King David,

whose 40-year reign dated between 1010 and 970 BCE.

In modern times, Jerusalem was made the capital of Israel on Dec. 14, 1949.

Israel controlled West Jerusalem throughout much of the Arab Israeli-War of 1948-9. (The border of Israel generally in that war looks like an amoeba more than a country.) After 1949 Israel controlled West Jerusalem (roughly 7:00-to 10:00) and Jordan controlled the Old City and East Jerusalem (roughly 10:00-7:00). On the 7th of June 1967, Israeli Paratroopers fighting the Six-Day War landed in the Old City and removed it from Jordanian control. By the end of the day East Jerusalem was also in Israeli hands. In 1981, Israel formally created the municipality of Jerusalem by annexing the Old City and East Jerusalem and unifying them with West Jerusalem to create one urban center.
