The United States won the war and Mexico signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848. The treaty gave the U.S. lands that would become the states of Arizona, California, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, southwestern Colorado, and southwestern Wyoming. Mexico received 15 million dollars and gave up its claims to Texas.
The Texan army snuck up on the Mexican army while they were taking a siesta (a Mexican nap). They killed and or captured the Mexican army. The leader, Santa Ana, ran away but was found hiding some bushes. We gave him two options to die or give Texas its freedom. Obviously he chose to let go of his rule over Texas and let it become independent. Later it became a U.S state but that's a different question.
Texas existed as a Republic after secession from Mexico in 1836 but decided in favor of annexation with United States in 1845. This led to Mexican-American war in 1846, which raged on for two years. At the end of war Mexico accepted USA claim over Texas and all territorial disputes were settled and Texas awarded its present day boundaries. During American Civil war Texas seceded from Union and joined Confederation. This ended after Confederate defeat.
