The French people came to Trinidad in August of 1666 and began colonizing the area in search of riches. The French remained in Trinidad until the late 1700s when the British began exploring the area.

The French came to Trinidad as French planters from Grenada in search of the richness of the land. He approached the King of Spain who extended an invitation for French planters in the country.

With the French Revolution raging on after 1789, many French - mostly then living on the nearby islands of Martinique, Saint Lucia, Grenada, Guadeloupe and Dominica, decided do move to the quieter and safer Trinidad, where they were moreover rewarded by the Spanish governor with tax incentives and grants of land on which to restart their (also for the Trinidad economy) highly profitable sugar and cocoa plantations.

Columbus rediscovered Trinidad in 1498 on behalf of the Spanish but the Spanish did not actually settle in Trinidad until the 18th century, for cocoa cultivation.
