The year 1500 was the date upon which the first voyage of Pedro Álvares Cabral [c. 1468 - c. 1520] for Portugal took place. Cabral sailed under the patronage of King Manuel I of Portugal [May 31, 1469-December 13, 1521]. For his first voyage, he gathered a fleet of 13 ships and 1,500 men. They sailed out of Lisbon on March 9, 1500 and first sighted Brazil on April 21.
The voyage reached its destination of Calicut [Kozhikode] in the south Indian state of Kerala on September 13, 1500. Cabral left India on January 16, 1501 and arrived in Portugal on June 23, 1501. Great losses during the voyage included losing two-thirds of his fleet and losing renowned Portuguese explorer Barolomeu Dias [c. 1451-May 24, 1500], who went down with four ships off the coast of the Cape of Good Hope on the southern tip of Africa.
