Australia's federation occurred on 1 January 1901.
Prior to 1901, Australia was made up of six self-governing colonies; New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Queensland, Western Australia and Tasmania. On 1 January 1901, federation of the colonies meant these colonies, or states, were joined under the name of the Commonwealth of Australia. Essentially, this meant the first step to Australia becoming independent of England, and the first step towards self-government.
Australia's first Governor-General, John Hope, made the proclamation at Centennial Park in Sydney. Australia's first Prime Minister was Edmund Barton.
Advantages of federation were freedom of trade and removal of tariffs on trade over state borders; better and more unified defence; and more uniform laws across Australia.

Although the eastern coastal strip of Australia was claimed on behalf of the British Empire in 1770 by Lieutenant James Cook, and was named by him as New South Wales, this only refers to Australia's inclusion in the British Empire. The six colonies within Australia federated to become the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. This was when Australia actually became a part of the British Commonwealth.

1901 was a special year for Australia in a number of ways: It was the year the Commonwealth of Australia was proclaimed as the states were united in Federation (January 1). The first Commonwealth Parliament was opened in Australia by the Duke of Cornwall and York, later King George V (May 9). The Australian flag was flown for the first time (September 3). Despite Australia's newfound independence, the country also mourned the passing of Queen Victoria of England on January 22, after a reign of sixty-three years, seven months, and two days.
