During the US Civil War, New Orleans was the largest Confederate city in the deep South. By the middle of 1861, the Union had a blockade near New Orleans at the mouth of the Mississippi River. By December of 1861, Admiral Farragut and David Porter organize a fleet of 17 warships and 19 gunboats set up to launch a major assault on New Orleans. Confederate forts defending the city are bombarded by cannon fire from the Union fleet. The Southern defenses prove no match for the assault. And by April 25, 1862 the Union fleet, anchored at New Orleans' front door forces the city to surrender.
