During the cold war era (1945-1990), only "National Security" (the cold war) mattered. If something involved communism (and it had potential to spread like cancer) the US was involved. Other than that, starving people and the volunteer groups (Feed the Children, Red Cross, etc.) that tried to feed them (as is evidenced even today, according to current TELEVISION commercials), were the ONLY interests in non cold war areas.
