Between 1947/48 and 1989 these countries in Europe had Communist regimes: * Soviet Union (1917-1991) * Poland * East Germany * Czechoslovakia * Hungary * Romania * Bulgaria * Albania * Yugoslavia
The states that were part of the Soviet Union all used to be Communist. They are:
Russia
Ukraine
Belarus
Kazakhstan
Uzbekistan
Azerbaijan
Dagestan
Armenia
Moldova
Georgia
Lithuania
Latvia
Estonia
Of these, the first four plus Georgia were the strongest in the USSR.
There are also nations that, whilst not actually a part of the USSR itself, all had Communist governments and were part of the Warsaw Pact bloc. They are:
Bulgaria
Hungary
Romania
Poland
The Czech Republic and Slovakia (in those days, they were one nation called Czechoslovakia)
Albania
East Germany (this doesn't exist any longer, having been officially abolished in 1990 following German re-unification)
Poland, East Germany and Romania were the most powerful military nations in the Warsaw Pact.
There was also Yugoslavia, which was NOT a part of the Warsaw Pact, and was a smaller power-bloc of it's own, that was more liberal and tolerant than the USSR was. Yugosalvia itself consisted of a number of separate states, all of which are now independent. They are:
Serbia
Croatia
Slovenia
Macedonia
Montenegro
Eastern European countries became communist, which was a political ideology modernized by the USSR.
The Iron Curtain divided Europe into two halves, east and west. The western democratic countries were on the side of the United States. The eastern communist countries were on the side of the Soviet Union. The Iron Curtain fell when communism collapsed and the eastern European countries became democratic.
Most Eastern European countries became independent in the 1990s. They also switched from communism to democracy.
Yugoslavia
The countries of Eastern Europe (which became satellites of the USSR after World War 2) in most cases did not accept aid under the Marshall Plan because of their control by Moscow.
Western Europe had a much stronger economy. Eastern Europe fell into poverty and more Eastern European countries became police states.
