Most Greek city-states followed the oligarchy type of government.
In 506 BC,the Athenians set up a democratic system.The word democracy is formed from the Greek words "demos" (means people) and"kratein (means rule), so that a democracy is ruled by the people.
The government was set up through the election of representatives and plebiscites (direct votes).
These are the three different styles of government most city-state had:
- monarchy: a king ruled the city state
- oligarchy: the city state is ruled by a small group of people
- democracy: the city-state is ruled by all people. Matters were decided by the populace as a whole.

Socrates was from ancient Athens, which was a city-state known for its democratic government. He lived during a time when Athens was experimenting with democracy and participating in civic life was important for its citizens.

Athens had a direct democracy. All citizens in Athens could participate directly in the government. It is called direct democracy because each person's decision directly affects the out-come of a vote. Women, however, were excluded from this process.
