In 1853 the first YMCA for blacks was founded by Anthony Bowen as freed slave in Washington DC. Providing help to newcomers and immigrants has always been part of the the YMCA's work. In 1856 the nation's first known English as a second language class was held for German immigrants at the Cincinnati YMCA. Are you speaking of the Lovejoy Mansion in Janesville, Wisconsin? If so, yes; it does indeed have a gymnasium attached. I think that goes back to its days as the old YMCA.
