What was the colonial society like in new Spain?

Spanish colonial society was divided into a Caste System. Peninsulares were the wealthy, elite and regarded themselves higher than everyone else because they were born in Spain. Creoles were the middle class, and were often born in Latin America. However, they were sometimes raised in Europe where they picked up on many of the Enlightenment ideas. Mulattos were at the bottom of the society structure and were those made up of mixed European and African heritage. Enslaved peoples were also Mulattos, and people in this class tended to be very poor.

There was an incredible degree of racism and class-structure in New Spain. Peninsulares (Spaniards born in Spain) were the only individuals who could be in leadership positions. They and Creoles/Criollos (Spaniards born in Latin America) owned large tracts of land, had innumerable servants and slaves, and lived a very affluent life. Native Americans/Indígenas had a much worse time as forced laborers making minimal wages, especially in the silver mines. African slaves worked in back-breaking labor to grow major crops like sugar, cotton, and tobacco.
