Maryland received it's charter in 1632 from Charles I of England. It was founded by Lord Baltimore, because he had attempted to settle in Virginia and was rejected for being a Catholic. It was named for Queen Henrietta Maria of England, Charles' wife and a Catholic. Maryland as a result of its founder had one of the first religious tolerance laws, which influenced the First Amendment of the U.S. constitution.
