Pompeii was based on a lava plateau on the cost of Italy beside the river Sarnus and the mount Vesuvius.
The surrounding lands were very fertile due to the volcanic soil and the river provided lots of water.
It was founded by the Oscans who first found Herculaneum they were a tribe that came from the mountains.
The Greeks came originally as traders but then ended up taking over Pompeii.
They lost to the samnites who built up the towns defenses and made it into the city it was at the time of the eruption The plans they used were originally from a Greek architect called Hipodamus.
The Samnites were originally Allies of Rome but tried to become independent They ended up loosing and became part of the Roman empire. Because of this much of Pompeii's land was given to Roman veterans who brought with them money and expertise causing Pompeii to thrive.
In 79 AD Vesuvius erupted destroying Pompeii and it's neighbouring towns in just over 24 hours.
The entire city of Pompeii was buried under ash and anyone who was there died. The site, which is 65 acres, was uncovered in the 1800's and today you can see the city as it was when it was buried in 79 AD. However immediately after the eruption, the looters moved in. Some were legitimate, sent by the owners of houses to try to recover some property, others were thieves trying to take advantage of the disaster. Bodies of a trio of looters have been found in a collapsed tunnel and even a posting on a wall was found notifying others that a certain house had been "done".
Pompeii remained buried under 5 metres of volcanic ash. It remained forgotten for centuries It took 1480 years before Pompeii was first unearthed in 1599, during excavations for an underground channel. However, the finds were covered again. It is thought that this was because some of the frescoes which were found had scenes which were considered obscene. Herculaneum, the other Roman town which was buried by volcanic ash, was discovered in 1738. This led to excavations at Pompeii in 1748. The first systematic excavations at Pompeii took place in 1764.
