Oaxaca, Mexico is famous for several things, most notably: 1) several types chile-based of sauces called "Mole", 2) Mescal, an alcoholic beverage similar to Tequila but with a smokey flavor, 3) A type of black decorative pottery known as "Barro Negro", 4) and intricately carved & painted figurines (usually of animals) known as Alebrijes.
The brightly-colored wood sculptures are folk art from Oaxaca, in southern Mexico. Originally done in paper-mache by artist Pedro Linares, many were carved from the wood of wild copal trees.

Jack-o'-lanterns have been carved into many different vegetables over the years, pumpkins being the most popular and gourds being one of the first. In Scotland, turnips were quite popular as well as pumpkins.
