Both can make excellent pets. It depends on what you are looking for in a bird. If you are really big on teaching one to talk then a male would be a better choice but there is no guarantee that it will. Females can talk as well but not as clearly as a male. Otherwise I have found both genders to be easily trained and tamed and great birds to have .

Male parakeets. That's not to say your female bird will never speak, some of them do I've "heard", but males in general are the much better talkers and sing much more than females.
