The Tower of London was made out of various types of stone in particular Kentish rag-stone which was very hard and durable. Caen stone from France was used for decorative features on the buildings because it is suitable for carving. In the 17th and 18th centuries a lot of the stone work was altered and replaced with Portland stone.
