Circe and Calypso kept Odysseus from reaching home in very different ways. After Odysseus conquers the goddess-enchantress Circe she helps him . She is an excellent hostess and lover to Odysseus and his men have to convince him to leave. Calypso falls in love withe Odysseus and keeps him captive until Hermes convinces her to let him free.

Odysseus travels eventually lead him to be shipwrecked upon Ogygia, where he is rescued and nursed to health by the nymph Calypso. She keeps Odysseus there for 7 years, before helping him build a raft to escape. Odysseus raft is wrecked by Poseidon, by with the help of a river god, he manages to make it ashore to Scheria, where is taken in by the Phaecians. They sail Odysseus home on their blessed ships.
Calypso keeps Odysseus on her island for many years because she is in love with him and wants him to stay with her forever. She tries to seduce him and offers him immortality but eventually he wants to return home to his wife Penelope in Ithaca.
Circe keeps Odysseus on her island for a year by providing a good life style for Odysseus and his men, including Odysseus lying with her. Calypso also lies with Odysseus, although she keeps him on her island passively by not helping him escape.
