The primary issue between Armenia and Azerbaijan is control over the autonomous region of NAGORNO-KARABAKH (Azerbaijani and International Name) or ARTSAKH (Armenian Name). During the period of Soviet control, one of the ways that the Russia maintained control of the Soviet Union was to put autonomous regions of one ethno-national group inside the territory of a different ethno-national group. In this case, the Armenian-majority region of Nagorno-Karabakh was placed within Azerbaijan. As a result, when Armenia became independent, the people of Nagorno-Karabakh voted to join the territory with independent Armenia and not remain part of Azerbaijan. The Azerbaijani government did not want to lose the territory and this resulted in a war between the Armenian government (to annex Nagorno-Karabakh) and the Azerbaijani government (to retain Nagorno-Karabakh). The war caused a large amount of suffering and the migration of over a million combined refugees (Azerbaijanis from Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenians from Azerbaijan).

In 1994, Armenia and Azerbaijan reached a ceasefire, where Armenia controlled most of Nagorno-Karabakh, but the two countries have not formalized a final peace treaty. Without a formalized peace treaty, the two countries are still at war and have not resolved the refugee issues, which still present a major thorn in each other's sides. Additionally, Armenia's close relationship with Iran, which has imperialist aspirations with Azerbaijan and Azerbaijan's close relationship with Turkey, which denies the Armenian genocide, further impact relations.

Who are the enemies of Azerbaijan?

Biased Propaganda: Main enemy is themselves or radical Islam! The History of much of Azerbaijan lands was originally Armenian lands and the Azeri's are Muslim Turks and as in any Muslim country they always push their agenda, to convert to Islam or be beheaded and or heavily punished thru barbaric Islamic acts and also not that is that many ISIS train and come from Azerbaijan etc.. Armenia is a Christian nation with a very constant pressure from the radical Islamic Azerbaijan and it's Islamic terrorist actions. Actual Answer: Azerbaijan retains good or neutral relations with a majority of the world, even Israel (Which supplies them with arms). Azerbaijan's main enemy is Armenia, due to the contested Nagorno-Karabakh territory located within Azerbaijan (Armenia claims that it is an independent republic, while Azerbaijan claims it as it's own territory). France and Iran are sometimes considered enemies by the local population in Baku, but the government maintains stable neutral relations with both. There are some disputes with Iran over oil, but no territorial disputes.

What is present day condition of USSR?

The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics dissolved for good on December 25, 1991, breaking into its constituent republics: the European republics of Belarus, Ukraine, and Moldova; the trans-Caucasus republics of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia; the trans-Uralic republics of Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan; the Baltic republics of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia; and the huge multi-ethnic, trans-continental republic of the Russian Federation. These nations still exist, recognizing the same borders that divided them as SSRs, although there are political tensions within and between these nations that may cause future changes in the geography of the area, for example in Chechnya (within the Russian Federation), between Armenia and Azerbaijan in Nagorno-Karabakh, and between Georgia and the Russian Federation in Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

What problems exist in azerbaijan?

severe water and air pollutionAzerbaijan is what is known as a frozen conflict zone, meaning that there was a war which has not been fully resolved, even though fighting has mostly stopped. Azerbaijan and neighboring Armenia have each claimed the Nagorno-Karabakh region since 1988, three years before both became independent from the Soviet Union in 1991. The fighting ended in 1994 with a ceasefire, but the status of the region is still not determined officially. Ethnic Armenians in the region have founded a "Nagorno-Karabakh Republic", but Azerbaijan still claims the area as part of its territory. The conflict still means high tensions between Azerbaijan and Armenia; this is a delicate issue.Azerbaijan, like many of its neighbors has had a rocky relationship with democracy. There were three coups since independence, in 1993, 1994, and 1995. There is widespread mistreatment of the press and of gay people, and although there are elections, they are often tainted by allegations of vote fraud. Freedom House ranks Azerbaijan as "Not Free", on the threshold of "Partly Free".The Azerbaijani economy has experienced excellent growth due to oil and natural gas exports, but the economy shows some signs of what is known as "Dutch Disease", an over-reliance on one commodity. This leads to excessive inflation, which makes non-petroleum goods more expensive, and the possibility that disruptions in the oil supply could sink the economy.
