Mexico's national flower is the dahlia, including all its 30 sub-species and over 20,000 varieties. The genus was first described by European botanists in 1570. The earliest species described were the Dahlia pinnata and Dahlia imperialis; it has been genetically traced to central Mexico, to a borough in present-day Mexico City known as Milpa Alta.
It was declared Mexico's national flower on May 13, 1963 by presidential decree.
There are three of them. One is the Poinsettia (Euphorbiapulcherrima) or Flor de Nochebuena which is indigenous to Mexico and was brought to the US by Joel Roberts Poinsett in 1828. The second one is the Mexican Marigold (Tageteserecta), also known as Flower of the dead or Cempasuchil. The last one is the Dahlia, which is the national flower of Mexico.
The Poinsettia or Flor de nochebuena is the most popular, specially around Christmas. Other popular flowers include the Zempasucithl or Mexican Marigold, sunflowers, carnations and of course, roses of all colors.
It is a O'Keeffe flower and it is from England or Mexico.
