The spelling of 'Verrazzano' is correct. The name is the last name of the Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano [1485-1528]. Verrazzano was considered the first European since the 11th century Norseman Leifr Eriksson [c. 970-c. 1020] to have explored the Atlantic coast of North America, from the Carolinas to Newfoundland.
On his first voyage to the New World, Verrazzano reached the Carolina coast on March 1, 1524. On his second trip, of spring 1527, his ship was blown off course. So he ended up visiting Brazil. On his final trip, of 1528, he visited Florida, the Bahamas, and the Lesser Antilles. It's thought that it was on the modern island of Guadeloupe that he was killed and eaten by fierce Carib indians.
Jamestown Verrazzano Bridge was created in 1992.
