The Dutch seat of government, as well as the living residence of the Dutch monarch Queen Beatrix is Den Haag (The Hague, in English). This is NOT the capitol of the Netherlands, which is Amsterdam.

Explanation for this is (allegedly!) that after the reign of Napoleon (1813) there was great support for bringing the Prince of Orange Nassau William back from exile (in England) and ask him to become King William the first of the Netherlands. Only problem was that the city of Amsterdam, biggest and richest in the soon-to-be-country, was traditionally republican minded and would likely not support the corronation. In order to get the people of Amsterdam to cooperate and support the new King wholeheartedly, they promised Amsterdam it could become the new nation's capitol...to which they agreed.

Yet to this day, no parts of (national) government work from Amsterdam, despite bids from the city for the state departments to consider the move.
