The largest lowland in Mexico is located between the southern Gulf of Mexico and the Yucatan Peninsula. It includes the Mexican states of Veracruz, Campeche, and Tabasco, bordering the Gulf of Mexico, and the Mexican states of Yucatan, Quintana Roo, as well as the whole country of Belize and the northern Guatemalan department of Petén, in the Yucatan Peninsula.

On the other hand, the largest highland is known as the Central Mexican Plateau, roughly covering two-thirds of the country, from the U.S.-Mexico border, down to central Mexico. It is defined by the Sierra Madre mountain ranges, which could be considered an extension of the Sierra Nevada and Rocky Mountains.
