Lago De Nicaragua is the largest lake in Central America. It is located in southwestern Nicaragua. Lago De Nicaraguais about 100 miles (160 km) long, and has a surface area of about 3,000 square miles (8,000 sq km). Lago De Nicaragua is the largest freshwater lake between the United States and Peru, and it is connected to Lake Managua by the Tipitapa River and is drained by the San Juan River. Lago De Nicaragua is the only freshwater lake in the world containing marine animal life, including sharks, swordfish, and tarpon. Lago De Nicaragua'slargest island, Ometepe, is the most popular site in Nicaragua for pre-Columbian archaeological finds. Lago De Nicaragua is 105 ft (32 m) above sea level and in certain parts is as deep as 84 ft (26 m).
