The first settlement in Jamaica was Sevilla la Nueva (New Seville). The first capital was St. Jago de la Vega, now Spanish Town, built around 1534.

After England seized Jamaica in 1655, most of the government was at Port Royal until an earthquake leveled the city in 1692, and Spanish Town again became the capital.

The capital was moved to Kingston in 1872.

There is no actual capitol (legislative building) in the capital (city) of Kingston. The government meets at Gordon House, next to the old Parliament building, Headquarters House. The old capitol is at Spanish Town, 10 miles to the west.
