Holland is derived from the Middle Dutch term holtland meaning "wooded land". The Hague, which is in the North Holland province of the Netherlands, also refers to a wooded area. It literally means "the hedge" which is a wooded area that forms a boundary or enclosure. Apparently, to the Dutch, trees were meaningful landmarks.
