Ashmore and Cartier islands are not on any continent. They are, however, one of the external (offshore) territories of Australia.
Ashmore and Cartier Islands
In Australia, two examples of a territory are the Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory. Offshore, there are numerous external territories, such as Christmas Island, Norfolk Island, Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Coral Sea Islands, Heard & McDonald Islands, Ashmore & Cartier Islands and the Australian Antarctic Territory.
Australia has two mainland territories. Only The Northern Territory has a capital, and that is Darwin. The other mainland territory is the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), which is where Australia's national capital of Canberra is situated. Canberra is not the capital of the ACT, as the ACT comprises land reserved exclusively for Australia's capital. Canberra is the capital of the entire country. In addition, Australia has seven offshore territories: Cocos (Keeling) Islands Christmas Island Heard and MacDonald Islands Coral sea Islands Territory Australian Antarctic Territory Ashmore and Cartier Islands Norfolk Island Only Norfolk Island has a capital, and that is Kingston.
Australia has several offshore territories which are islands. These include: * Norfolk Island * Christmas Island * Heard & McDonald Island * Cocos (Keeling) Islands * Ashmore & Cartier Islands There is also the southern state of Tasmania, an island separated from the mainland by Bass Strait.
Australia has 10 external territories. These include Ashmore and Cartier Islands, Australian Antarctic Territory, Christmas Island, Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Coral Sea Islands, Heard Island and McDonald Islands, Norfolk Island, and the Territory of the Heard and McDonald Islands.

Both of Australia's mainland territories, the ACT or the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory, were established in 1911. The ACT was established purely for the purpose of setting aside land for the country's new capital, while the Northern Territory was initially part of South Australia, and only referred to Commonwealth control in 1911.All of Australia's external territories (Ashmore and Cartier Islands, Christmas Island, the Cocos (or Keeling) Islands, the Coral Sea Islands, Heard Island, Jervis Bay, the McDonald Islands, Macquarie Island, Norfolk Island and the Australian Antarctic Territory) were acquired later than 1911.
