Chechak is the Americanized version of the Croatian family name of Cicak. The name was changed by a indiscriminate customs clerk at Ellis Island, NY. In the Croatian language the word cicak (with accent marks over the c's) means the thorny seed of the burdock plant. It can also be slang for unwanted (like someone who is a thorn in the butt or one who clings to another). Also the word Cheechako is an American Indian name which means greenhorn or tenderfoot in the south west or man of the north in Canada. I must not leave out the fact that there are a number of Polish Americans in the Pittsburgh, Pa area with the same Chechak name. More research is needed to determine if there was also a spelling change. This information was given to me by my Croatian/American father and by a number of Croatian immigrants that I have met
Hunter Chechak is 5' 10".
