A few souls choose to remain in Antarctica during the winter-over period, when the continent is isolated. Typically this period is between about February and about October.

During this period, there are long periods of no sunrise -- months.

The human body responds to no sun by heightening all senses. Lights are dimmed, sounds turned town, skin becomes more sensitive. A few people retreat noticeably into their 'shells' -- and outwardly, even with their eyes open, they appear to be 'somewhere else'.

For most, this is a temporary and not a serious condition. We recognize it in each other and tend to treat people very gently during these tender periods. It's also known as 'long eye' among the locals.
