The palmetto tree is commonly refered to as a PALM tree. There are a few varieties that range fron a few feet tall to 70 feet high. It is the state tree of South Carolina. It looks like a coconut tree in shape and size, but the cocanut tree has long single stemed leaves and the Palmetto has multi fingered leaves on each stem like the fingers of the hand. The fruit of the palm trees vary from nuts to dates.

A woody plant whose foliage -- some of which may measure 6 feet 1.83 meters) across -- is that of a fan-shaped, little palm tree and whose height is well under 30 feet (9.14 meters) is what a palmetto shrub is. The plant in question (Sabal minor) may be found maturing to diminutive heights of 3 to 6 feet (0.92 to 1.83 meters). It particularly serves to add horizontal interest to landscapes because of mature widths of 10 feet (3.05 meters).
