Mexico is made up of 31 federal entities known as states and a federal district - much like the US and Washington DC.Within this Federal District - or "Distrito Federal" as it is called by the locals - lies Mexico City. However, this Federal District is also subdivided into "Delegaciones" (equivalent to US counties). One of these Delegaciones is called Xochimilco (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xochimilco) which spans some 47 square miles and has a population of about 370,000.Within Delegación Xochimilco is located the Xochimilco Ecological Park, which contains some of the last remains of Texcoco lake (this lake spanned most of what today is known as Mexico City). This is a swampy, tree-covered area where the distinctive chinampas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinampa) become part of the landscape, and many of these crops include ornamental plants and flowers.

The chinampas, which are incorrectly known as 'floating hardens'. Most of the remaining chinampas that can be found in Mexico City are near the park and ecologic reserve of Xochimilco.
Xochimilco is important because it preserves the ancient agricultural technique of chinampas, which were artificial islands used for farming by the Aztecs. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a popular tourist destination in Mexico City, known for its colorful boats and floating gardens. Furthermore, it plays a significant role in the cultural and ecological heritage of the region.
