Cardiff Castle was built by Robert Fitzhamon, Lord of Gloucester, on a site once used by the Romans for a fort. The castle's original purpose was to be used as a base for controlling the countryside. In time, it became a residence, and it was much rebuilt during the 19th century. It is in Cardiff, Wales, and is open for visitors and events.

Cardiff Castle, like nearly all castles of its time, was a fort, intended to be the center of defense for the territory around it. Its location was chosen, at least in part, because old earthworks from an earlier Roman fort were still in place, and it could be supplied from the sea, in case of siege.

Aside from its use as a fort, it also was a prison for Robert Curthose, who was the eldest son of William the Conqueror, and might have been expected to be the next king after William. Robert had been rather unruly as a son and revolted against his father more than once, leading to his being passed over as heir to the throne, leaving him the Dukedom of Normandy instead. After a series of difficulties, King Henry I had him held in Cardiff Castle.

Cardiff Castle was used as a fort in various wars and rebellions in Wales. It was the site of the execution of Llywelen Bren, who mounted one of the last rebellions in Wales against the English.
