No. Casino gambling was legalized in Atlantic City in a 1976 statewide referendum. The first legalized casino was Resorts International in the former Chalfonte-Haddon Hall Hotel, opened on May 26, 1978. 2 points of confusion: Many buidlings along the shore were/are named "Casinos". There was one on the Atlantic City boardwalk for many years in front of the Hotel Brighton, right near Park Place. The Casino in Asbury Park is currently under renovation. These were beachside pavilions for dining, entertainment, and so on, and never were officially used for gambling. The stories are many and varied, but apparently there were several discreet gambling houses in Atlantic City from at least the 1930's through the 1960's. Not advertised, of course. As for gambling at the Haddon Hall owned by Henry W. Leeds, this is quite improbable. He was a member of a prominent Atlantic City Quaker family. Alcohol was not even served at the Chalfonte-Haddon Hall for years. Their first cocktail lounge, the Terrace Lounge, was opened in the 1960's. Times have changed.
