Democratic Kampuchea was the name given to Cambodia by the Khmer Rouge during their time in power. This was ended by a rapid Vietnamese invasion which began in December 1978, but after months of retreats and fighting, Khmer Rouge members loyal to the old government regrouped in the west of the country, on the border with Thailand, along with the fallen DK administration. They entered a coalition with other groups during the early 1980s in order to fight the Vietnamese-backed government now named the People's Republic of Kampuchea.
1. The situation in Cambodia today can be linked to the Khmer Rouge years because it affected many people even today. The Khmer Rouge has destroyed many people's life, not only the people who have died, but also the people who are still living now. There are many people left with no arms or legs after the legacy of the Khmer Rouge Regime. Their mind-set will never come back to how it was before the Khmer Rouge; they will never be the same person again. Many have lost their family members and they will have to deal with that for the rest of their living years. The hate inside their hearts will never set them free, and because of it, it is hard for them to trust anyone.
The Residue of Khmer Rouge Regime
by: Zi Ying Too (11th grade)
The Khmer Rouge Regime had happened over thirty years, from 1975, April, 17th, to 1979, January, 7th. During those years, Cambodians had to live in fear of death every single day of their life. Everyone's life became a turning point within 24 hours when the City of Phnom Penh was evacuated and emptied. Everyone was forced to abandon their house and flee to the country side. Their city quickly became a ghost town, and their nightmare began. Everyone was forced into labor whether they were women, men, or children. Their life changed drastically, they had to experience the loss of lives and face difficulties every day of their life. They had to survive in the worse situation one can imagine, hell on earth, fighting to survive and to continue with their lives. Many of the workers who were forced into labor were killed, tortured, treated unfairly by the Khmer Rouge Regime for more than three years. The Khmer Rouge has destroyed the lives of Cambodians and this event has impacted Cambodia even until today.
Many people are still facing difficulties in their lives because it is linked to what happened to them in the past. They learned not to trust anyone, even their own family members because, during that time anyone could be a spy. The whole society flipped upside down, the people's attitudes were changed, they were selfish, and they sought benefits only for themselves. Their family conditions were poor from the result of forced marriages during the regime. The numbers of widows increased; children were either sent to an orphanage or usually left with only one of their parents. Before the regime happened, men are usually the head of the family, providing the needs, while women were made to obey their husbands, taking care of the house and children. But after the regime, the society changed, women were forced to work outside of their house in order to survive or to provide for their children's needs. These problems facing Cambodia can all be traced back to the brutal Khmer Rouge Regime.
The Khmer Rouge Regime had an immense change in the society. Everything from the past has greatly affected people in Cambodia in present times. Everyone's held their trusts back because they weren't sure of whether or not they will be betrayed. They had hard times dealing with each other's trust. This event greatly affected them not only physically but also mentally. People thought that life was unstable; they held grudges in their hearts and blamed the past for the situation they are in. If the whole country continues like this they will never be able to recover quickly. If they don't adjust their attitude toward the Khmer Rouge or make any effort to change their country, Cambodia will never become a better country, they will always remain the same and other countries will always be able to surpass them. Cambodia should now work together as a whole country, and seek for benefits as a whole nation.
Millions of people who opposed the Khmer Rouge were killed.
