These ruins are some of the largest and oldest in sub-Saharan Africa. The city was made entirely of stone, spanned almost three square miles and is estimated to have housed up to 18,000 people. One of the carved images (a bird) that originated from the city is now a national symbol of Zimbabwe. South Africa's Voortrekker MonumentIn Pretoria, South Africa, you can see the monument dedicated to the pioneers who left Cape Colony in 1835 and 1854. It is a large, gray structure made of stone and includes two interesting elements. The historical frieze is a relief that depicts the journey of the pioneers and also has images showing their work, habits and religious beliefs. The cenotaph is the central structure that is made for the sun to shine directly through at noon on Dec. 16 each year, illuminating the words "We for thee, South Africa" written in its center. There is a safari camp in the interior of the park where visitors can camp and drive through the park on their own or hire a guide to drive them.
