The original name, and still current name, of Morocco in Arabic is al-Mamlaka al-Maghribiyya which means the Kingdom of the Maghreb Region. The term "Maghreb" comes from the Arabic "gharb" which means "west" since Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia (the area commonly considered the Maghreb) is on the western edge of the Arab World.

The name Morocco in English, comes, like most European names for the country, from a bastardization of the Arabic word for Marrakesh, "Morrakush". As a result, the name only implies that Morocco is the country with Marrakesh in it.

The English name "Morocco" originates from, respectively, the Spanish and Portuguese names "Marruecos" and "Marrocos". These, in turn, derived from "Marrakesh", the medieval Latin name for the former Almoravid dynasty and Almohad Caliphate capital from ancient Morocco.
