Empanada is a Spanish word. In Brazil the equivalent would be a "pastel" (a fried pastry traditionally filled with meat or cheese, but can nowadays be filled with anything from pulled chicken and heart of palm to chocolate), or a "pastel assado" (literally, "baked pastel"), which is a baked pastry usually filled with either cheese, pulled chicken, heart of palm, or meat.
