The Shanghai Communiqué (1972) was a document of agreement between the United States and China that was created during Richard Nixon's presidency. Its main purpose was to state that both countries would work to try to improve their relations for the good of everyone. This was a step away from the US policy that recognized Taiwan as the sole legitimate Chinese government.
The communique was issued during the ground-breaking trip by President Nixon to Beijing in February, 1972, becoming the first US President to go to the People's Republic, which was nominally a political foe of the US.

Shanghai Communique was also called the Joint Communique of the United States of America (I believe). This was a document issued at around 1972 when President Nixon visited China. It states that it is in the interest of all nations for the U.S. and China to work towards normalizing their relations (think of it as breaking the awkwardness out of an awkward situation). However, it took seven years for this to happen.
