Isabella and Ferdinand were actually cousins. And back in the day, even though it didn't have the same stigma as it does today, you couldn't marry someone you were related to without permission from the pope. The document signed by the pope signifying that you had permission to marry was called a papal bull. So the papal bull of 1493 made Isabella's and Ferdinand's marriage legal.
