While the renown of Gail Borden, Jr. (November 9, 1801--January 11, 1874), is primarily based upon his development of condensed milk in 1853, he had settled in Texas in 1829 and worked there as a land surveyor, newspaper publisher, and inventor. As a surveyor, he plotted the towns of Galveston and Houston, and collaborated on the first topographical map of Texas, in 1835.
