Lightening rods.
Benjamin Franklin invented the lightning rod in 1749. It was designed to protect buildings and ships from lightning strikes by attracting the lightning and safely conducting it to the ground.
One inventor of the lightning rod was Benjamin Franklin. Another was a German priest, Diwisch. Both appear to have made their inventions in the same decade, around 1753. See "Who Really Invented The Lightning Rod?", The Electrical Review, volume 32, 10Feb1893, p.146.
The lightning rod was first thought of in 1770 and was actually made in 1772 ~silence dogood~
Benjamin Franklin in 1749. However, there is a claim, hotly debated, that the Russian Akinfiy Demidov, topped a building with a metal spire in the early 1700's
Benjamin Franklin's experiments with lightning and electricity proved that lightning is electricity and that lightning rods can protect buildings from lightning strikes. His kite experiment demonstrated the connection between lightning and electricity.
Benjamin Franklin is credited with inventing both the bifocals and the lightning rod. He created bifocals to address his presbyopia, a condition that causes difficulty in focusing on close objects, and he invented the lightning rod to protect buildings from lightning strikes by grounding the electrical charge.
Franklin believed that government of the few was open to tyranny and corruption. In order to protect the rights of the colonists (Englishmen), Franklin accepted the system we know as representative democracy. He recognized the importance of protecting the individual's rights in the political process and the purpose of the state (government) to protect the natural rights (inalienable) of all citizens. He was tolerant of other views, political, social, and religious.
