The placement of Canberra was the result of a compromise between the two dominant cities of Australia, Sydney and Melbourne. It lies between the two, a little inland, but is closer to Sydney. Given that Australia is such a vast continent, the capital cities are quite spread apart, particularly Perth and Darwin.
They placed Canberra in the middle of Sydney and Melbourne because They both wanted to be the capital of Australia and were fighting over it, so they put the capital in the middle.
