The Ruhr is a very large and productive industrial complex located on the western edge of Germany. Since its establishment during the early industrial period in Germany, it has been tremendously important for both its domestic and its military production. As just one example of the latter, the vast amounts of war material produced in the Ruhr during World War II led the Allies to focus on it in their strategic bombing campaigns.
