The temperature can be in Antarctica as low as -70 degrees Celsius (-94 degrees Fahrenheit).

The annual average temperature is -50°C (-58°F). Winter temperatures drop quickly, then level out. Summer is short, from mid-December to mid-January, however, temperatures can reach a balmy -30°C (-22°F).

Antarctica is a continent that covers 10% of the Earth's surface, and temperatures vary depending on your location. It can range from a summer high of 10°C to 15°C on the Antarctic Peninsula to a winter low of nearly -90°C in the interior. The average annual coastal temperature is -18°C.

The South Pole is 1200 km (750 miles) inland from the coast, and here are extremes there:

  • The lowest recorded temperature at South Pole, also recorded during the dark winter months, was -82.8°C (-117.0°F) on June 23, 1982.
  • Even at the high of summer the maximum temperature recorded at the South Pole is still well below freezing at -13.6°C (+7.5°F), recorded December 27, 1978.

The lowest temp recorded was - 89.9 degrees Celsius, recorded at Vostok Station, which is also inland.

Because Antarctica is a "polar" region, there is no precipitation, it has no lakes or rivers and is in fact the driest continent. Average temperatures in the Antarctic interior get down to -70 degrees Celsius during the winter months and -35 degrees Celsius in the warmer months. The coastal temperatures are much warmer with a range of -15 to -32 Celsius in Winter and -5 to +5 Celsius in Summer. The interior of Antarctica is considered the world's driest desert because the extreme cold freezes water vapour out of the air. The Australian Antarctic Territory (AAT) experienced the world's lowest temperature when -89.6 degrees Celsius was recorded on 21st July, 1983, at Vostok Station at an elevation of 3488 metres.

Antarctica is the coldest continent on earth with temperatures predictably always below zero -- freezing. However, at the Antarctic Peninsula, the warmest part of the continent, temperatures as high as 15 °C (59 °F) have been recorded.

According to Wikipedia:

"... [the] lowest reliably measured natural temperature on Earth of −89.2°C(−128.56°F)"

. . . was measured at Vostok Station Antarctica in 1983.

The warmest temperatures may be measured at some of the Peninsula stations somewhere in the mid-30°F range.
