I'm a New Yorker and I must say that you have to stay out of Lower East Side,SoHo,TriBeCa,Chinatown,Harlem, and Central Park only at night. But the Financial District is deserted after business hours so stay away from there too.

I'm a town's person and I 100% hate city. All the honkin 24/7.Really how could live like that.I think NYC is a dangerous place.

Answer

I'm sorry, I don't mean to be rude, but there's just no other way to say this: the above answerer has no idea what he's talking about. That answer is just so, SO wrong.

New York City used to be a dangerous place, in the 1970s and 1980s. But it is currently the safest major city in the U.S., and has been for several years now.

The Lower East Side, SoHo, TriBeCa, Chinatown, Harlem, and Central Park are no more dangerous than the rest of the city. I am a lifelong New Yorker, and I am also a night-owl, and I have spent so many hours, night after night, year after year, wandering the streets of Manhattan. And I have never been mugged or harassed. Not once.

In fact, I don't even know anyone who's been mugged in the last 20 years. Oh, wait, that's not true. My brother was mugged about 4 years ago. But he was mugged on the Upper West Side, which is one of the ritziest, toniest neighborhoods in the whole city.

And for the last 13 years, I have been going running in Central Park at night. Sometimes as late as 3 AM. It's not dangerous.

Of course, there is still crime in New York City. There's crime in every major city. But the murder rate in New York City is currently the lowest in the entire country. New York just isn't a dangerous city anymore, and anyone who says it is is simply misinformed.

Please, PLEASE, don't avoid the above-mentioned neighborhoods, as they are beautiful, exciting, full of culture, and lots of fun. And they are no more dangerous than any of the other NYC neighborhoods. Your chances of getting mugged in Harlem at night are no greater than your chances of getting mugged in Times Square at high noon.

And I have to say, I take particular offense when people say Harlem is dangerous. Anyone who says that Harlem is dangerous is speaking out of racist fears, rather than actual crime statistics. The people who say Harlem is dangerous are the people who never go there. So how would they know?

New York City is currently the safest major city in the United States, so nowhere in New York City can legitimately be called, "dangerous."

There are some areas in Brooklyn, Queens or The Bronx that are rougher than others, but there is no place that's, "dangerous," in the sense that you can't walk through them at night without a significant risk of being robbed, raped or murdered.

New York City is currently the safest major city in the U.S., and has been for several years now. So no place in New York City can legitimately be called dangerous.

Some areas might be less safe than others; for example, there are some neighborhoods in the more remote areas of Brooklyn, Queens, and The Bronx that are rougher than others. But there's no place that's "dangerous," in the sense that like, you can't walk through them at night without a significant risk of being robbed, raped, or murdered.

Bronx Harlem is NOT a borough, it's one of the many neighborhoods in Manhattan.
