Japan is an Island state comprising two large Islands and many smaller islands all aligned in a long curving chain. The presence of the islands and their shape is the result of a destructive plate boundary to the east of Japan. This boundary has also raised fold mountains along the west side of Japan and is the reason for the conical (active) volcanoes that dot the country.
