The state of Victoria is in the southeast of the Australian mainland, with the capital of Melbourne. It is bordered by New South Wales to the north and South Australia to the west. A little-known fact is that, although it is separated from the island state of Tasmania by Bass Strait, it actually shares a land border at Boundary Islet in Bass Strait, which lies at 39°12' S.
Victoria featured strongly in the Australian goldrushes, as some of the country's richest goldfields were found there. Victoria only became an independent colony from New South Wales a couple of months before the goldrushes started, and gold found there quickly made it the richest state in Australia at the time.
The floral emblem for Victoria is the Common Heath, sometimes referred to as Pink Heath. The faunal emblems are Leadbeaters Possum (animal) and the Helmeted Honeyeater (bird).
